Ryoko Kui's Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi in Japan) opens with a party wiped out by a dragon. Their leader's sister was eaten, they've lost their money, and they need to get back down fast. The solution: live off the land, which in a dungeon means cooking the monsters. A dwarf who has been doing exactly that for years shows them how.
What sounds like a gag turns into one of the most carefully built fantasy worlds in manga. Kui works out how slimes are digested, what a walking mushroom tastes like and why a dungeon would have an ecosystem at all, and then uses that groundwork for a story about grief, ambition and what people want from life. In Kamome Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier, Coco is a village girl who has always believed magic is something you're born with. Then she watches a witch cast a spell and sees that it's drawn: precise glyphs in special ink. She tries it herself, a spell goes badly wrong, and she becomes an apprentice to a witch named Qifrey, with a mystery about who gave her the spellbook that started it all running underneath.
Shirahama has also drawn covers for American comics publishers, and her pages show that illustrator's eye. The detailed, ornate linework is a perfect match for a magic system made of drawing. The rounded, childlike art is deliberately misleading. This is one of the cruelest fantasy worlds in manga, and later volumes include body horror and suffering that many readers find hard to take.
